What do I think about Facebook? I love it. I am a farmer in Farmville and Farm Town, but I have also renewed friendships with a lot of folks. There's Jack Davis. Jack was my Minister of Music when I pastored in South Georgia. Jack, and his wife Fran, are two wonderful people that bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. I have not seen them since 1979, but we have been able to visit through Facebook. I have found two of my former pastors, Chris Tiegreen and Bill Taylor. Chris is a writer/editor with WALK THRU THE BIBLE in Atlanta and Bill is a teacher and campus chaplain at a Christian school in the Charlotte area. Linda and Buck Harrington are former members at Midway Road and now live in Georgia. Marie Sapp Hughes Collins was my Secretary when I served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in Pahokee, Florida, and is a long-time family friend. She and her late husband, Arnold Hughes, worked with Mother and myself when I owned the funeral home in Pahokee. Edith Cowan was my next door neighbor when I owned the funeral home and she and her late husband, Bill, were the kind of neighbors you like to have. Anytime I needed help, they were there. Teryl Collier was organist, and still is, when I pastored at Canal Point Baptist Church, Canal Point, Florida. She was a very special person that radiates the love of Christ in her everyday life. Two cousins, Diana Wetherington Helton and the late Marc Wetherington, were located and became friends on my Facebook. I found a Facebook site for fans of Diana's late father Big Chief Wetherington who was bass singer of the Statesmen Quartet for twenty-five years until his death. We were both suprised to find out that a young man began this site because he had been introduced to Southern Gospel Music through a house keeper and he fell in love with the music. I have several people in my church that are listed among my friends. There are some folks I have never met and, to be honest, I really don't know other than through Facebook. I have found the majority to be the kind of people you want to have as friends. I am also a fan of Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys. I love his postings as they show that he loves his fans and really cares about us. I guess you can say that he makes you feel like one of the family. You will also find listed among my friends the two greatest female voices gospel music has ever known. I had the privilege of meeting Bobbie Jean White in August 1973. It was at "the farm" in Ty Ty, Georgia. Big Chief paid a visit to his grandmother, who is my great great aunt, accompained by his lovely wife, Liz, and Bobbie Jean. They were on the way back to Atlanta from the annual Waycross sing. They stopped by to visit and Aunt Hester's daughter, Thelma, called and told me they were there. I was living in Albany at the time and it was just a short hop over to Ty Ty. Imagine how I felt when I walked in and there was Bobbie Jean. The highlight of the day was a special concert by Bobbie Jean and the Big Chief. As the old saying goes, I was in hog heaven that day. What a voice that lady has. The first time I heard her voice was on a 33 1/3 record by the Smitty Gatlin Trio with her singing "How Big Is God?" It would make you pinch yourself to see if you were still here. The other lady is still traveling and still singing with her family group. For over 60 years she has blessed gospel music fans with her great voice. In January of last year I got to finally meet her as she came to Midway Road to sing for us. Lily Fern Weatherford gives the Weatherfords that sound that sets them apart from other groups. She was the tenor singer that every group wanted. When she sings her signature songs, "What a Precious Friend" and "Tell My Friends", heaven just comes down and fills your soul. They were back with us this January and they are going to be back in January 2011. I could sit and listen to her all night. These are just a few of my friends my Facebook. Now I may not have as many friends as some of you do, but I sure do have a group of quality people.
Let me tell you one thing I like about Facebook. You use language that I do not approve of or you talk about things that should not be on Facebook, I can do something about it. I will just disconnect you by taking you off my friend list. I like that because I want to associate with people who respect God and country and that keep things clean. I love Facebook. If you want to be my friend, I would love to have you. I know someone else that would like to be your friend, but you do not need Facebook to reach Him. Just ask Jesus Christ and He will be glad to be your friend. He will stick closer than a brother.
